چکیده

Although Sir William Osler died more than 70 years ago his life and writings continue to engender interest as manifest by the very active societies dedicated to his memory and the number of publications about him that continue to appear every year. The cause of this continuing admiration is difficult to explain, since, as has been pointed out, many of his now forgotten contemporaries were equally gifted clinicians and writers and made greater contributions to medical research.' Perhaps the reverence he still inspires is because his life, as described by his biographer Harvey Cushing, epitomises the ideal relationship between teacher and student, between physician and patient, between a doctor and his colleagues; and between men and books and libraries and societies and universities.

Sickle cell disease in Middle East Arab countries

The sickle cell (HbS) gene occurs at a variable frequency in the Middle Eastern Arab countries, with characteristic distribution patterns and representing an overall picture of blood genetic disorders in the region. The origin of the gene has been debated, but studies using β-globin gene haplotypes have ascertained that there were multiple origins for HbS. In some regions the HbS gene is common...

Osler's English school.

To ADDRESS the Osler Club on a topic to do with Osler suggests a temerity that I am acutely conscious ofnot possessing. It seemed inappropriate, however, tocommemorate Sir William's birthday by discussing such a macabre subject as the effect of smoking, such an indigestible subject as the cause of peptic ulcer, or such an indelicate subject as the use of contraceptives-or indeed any of the medi...
